HMS is a finite-volume computer code that solves the time-dependent, three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier Stokes equations. The gas mixture may consist of components included in a built-in library of 20 species. The code can simulate the effects of steam condensation, heat transfer to walls and internal structures, chemical kinetics, and fluid turbulence. It can model geometrically complex facilities having multiple compartments and internal structures. Hydrogen Mixing Studies (HMS) is a best-estimate analysis tool for predicting the transport, mixing, and combustion of hydrogen and other gases in nuclear reactor containments and other facilities. Helium is taken as simulant for hydrogen.

It investigates the distribution of light gas mixtures with condensing steam in air over two rooms with a dead end like it can occur in containment rooms in severe accidents.

The final test 25 of this series simulated a sequence of steam/helium injections followed by steam injection into air at room temperature (fig.1). GASFLOW successfully interpreted the comparable steam distribution tests 9 and 9bis without and with steam conests 9 and 9bis without and with steam condensation.

The OECD project SETH has also initiated a series of 25 tests in the Swiss facility PANDA to simulate mixing and stratification phenomena in a multi room facility that approaches the dimension of actual containment compartments. Successful GASFLOW validations have been reported for new tests in the German ThAI, the French Tosqan and Mistra facility in the frame of the international standard problem ISP47, that was organized by the OECD. Well instrumented new experiments have become available in the last years for validating the 3D predictive capability of CFD codes. Validation of GASFLOW with thermal hydraulic experiments that simulate such scenarios or some of their aspects is essential for assuring and backing up the containment simulations. The code is applied in the 3D analysis of steam/hydrogen distribution in various PWR containments to simulate scenarios of beyond design basis accidents. It models two-phase effects of condensation and/or vaporization in the fluid mixture region with the assumption of the homogeneous equilibrium (HEM) model, two phase heat transfer to and from structures by convection and mass diffusion, and the chemical kinetics of hydrogen combustion with general ignitor models and catalytic recombination. This application seems to work pretty well, although it was a bit irritating to have to import the same dieline in three times, once for each visible surface plus the open file dialog window didn't remember the last location, making me have to navigate back to my portfolio folder each time. The only problem with this method is that it's time-consuming and can be a bit difficult getting all of the renderings consistent with angle and lighting. As a graphic designer, I've created and produced a lot of packaging, which I normally render for my portfolio with Photoshop.
